Course content
The course includes these items: - A definition of globalization and fundamental concepts. The emergence of the globalization process and its principal participants. Analysis of selected global issues on model examples (e.g. the dynamics of demographic growth and sustainability, human settlements and sustainable development, diseases, health and globalization trends in contemporary society, threats to the diversity of life on the Earth). - Index of human development, human rights, cultural differences. Human settlements and sustainable development. - Global diseases - HIV / AIDS. - Global migration within the context of Czech Republic. - Climate changes - causes, the status and prognosis of the development of the global problem. Media coverage and political aspects of the problem. Interpretation of the topic at school. Interdisciplinary context of the topic. - The definition of the concept ?sustainable development?. The origin, development and critical evaluation of the conception of sustainable development. Basic principles of sustainable development. Sustainable development indicators. Approaches to education of sustainable development. - Economic globalization - economic development at the turn of the 20th and 21th century and its close relationship to globalization, the role of transnational corporations and foreign investment in this development, the international production network, the role of a state in the background of economic globalization. - Modern-day changes in the society and in the world economy, the speed of progress in technology and communication (technology development and innovation as basic determinants of globalization, technology and economic transformation, technology virtually shrinking time and space, technological changes of the production, geography of innovation). - The role of science in sustainable development, promotion of education, education towards sustainable development. - The role of international organizations in the global world. - Europe and the world, the importance of the European Union (the development of European integration, geographic potential of the European Union and its application). - Czech Republic and globalization.

learning outcomes
Students are able to: - explain and apply in the context the concepts of globalization such as global problems, the globalization of commerce, economy, culture, etc., local and regional issues in relation to global problems; - mark out the time of emergence of the globalization process and name its principal participants; - critically examine positive and negative aspects of globalization and its prospects; - examine thoroughly sources of information regarding global problems and verify their credibility and veracity; - assess the impact of globalization on selected countries, nations and regions in accordance with the analysis of particular examples; - realistically assess the impacts of population growth in the world (social, health, economic and ecological issues); - name and assess possible impacts of global issues relating to a man as individual human being (spread of diseases and drugs, poverty, terrorism, illegal migration, etc..) or to the society (from global and regional perspective); - identify and grasp the global changes and problems in the environment and conceive a way how to not contribute to their deepening; - consider possible strategies of sensitive exploitation of natural resources and they try through their positions in life to contribute to sustainable development; - explain and defend their positions; - realistically assess the topicality and urgency of various global issues; - grasp ethnic and religious aspects related to globalization processes and necessity of multicultural education; - grasp the problems of recent Europe, the process of formation of Europeanism, but on the other side also the specifics of particular areas, nations and cultures. This course develops in particular students´ cognitive processes related to understanding the global issues and learning, civic and problem-solving competencies and partially communication competency. Students will enhance the skills of the formation of adequate opinions on the issues on the basis of development of their knowledge.
