Course content
Beginnings of any art theory; Vitruv and his influence; the ideal of classic art and the idea of historical developement of art (Vasari, Winckelmann, Hegel...); artist as genius; scientific approach to history of art in the 19th century (Wölfflin, the Vienna School); theories of modern art (avant-garde); art and politics; visual culture and its discurses.

Students will be able to describe and compare the influential aesthetic concepts of 19th and 20th centuries. They will know the key personalities and topics of this subject. They will be able to understand and discuss texts, related to the lesson themes.
