Course content
The origins of philosophy. Mythos and logos. An investigation into the nature. Ionian and Italian branches of philosophy. Milesians. Pythagoreans, Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Parmenides and the Eleans. Empedocles and Anaxagoras. The Atomists. The Sophists and Socrates. Plato. Aristotle: logic, first philosophy, physics, ethics, politics. Hellenism: Stoicism, Epicureism, Scepticism. Neoplatonism.

learning outcomes
Students will be competent to orientate themselves in the fundamental topics of the ancient philosophy. Thanks to the critical reading of the original sources they will be able to identify partial tendencies established during the history of the western thinking into the respective philosophical systems. This knowledge will provide them with understanding of the whole process of formation of the European philosophical discourse within its vast spectrum of influences, which is necessary for further study of philosophy.
