Course content
Lectures: 1.Revision of basic terms of cytogenetics and molecular genetics. 2.Changes in quantity and structure of chromosomes. 3.Genic structure and changes (mutations) of genes. 4.Influence of harmful factors in emternal environment on human genome - radiation, chemical substances and biologic impacts. 5.Investigative techniques in cytogenetics. 6.Investigative techniques in molecular diagnostics. 7.Indication and interpretation of laboratory results. 8.Human genome project. 9.Genetic essence of cancer. 10.Hereditary forms of tumorous diseases. 11.Rules of genetic counselling. 12.Indication and interpretation of laboratory results. 13.Ethical problems in genetics.

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Contact hours - 26 hours per semester
  • Preparation for comprehensive test (10-40) - 20 hours per semester

learning outcomes
A student will understand the principles of gene and chromosome changes as a result of external environment and mechanisms of tumorous cell transformations. He/she will understand basic laboratory methods of investigation in cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics and rules of their assessment and interpretation.
