Course content
1. Environmental epidemiology ? the introduction. 2. Epidemiologic methodology in the environmental epidemiology. 3. Environmental health determinants. 4. Chemical substances. 5. Allergens. 6. Carcinogens. 7. Ionising and non-ionising radiation. 8. Physical factors ? noise, electromagnetic field, vibrations. 9. Climate changes, changes in the UV radiation on the surface of the Earth and their causes, health impacts, and options for prevention. 10. Biologic factors ? microorganisms, parasites. 11. Health determinants ? social and socioeconomic, historical, religious. 12. Lifestyles, diets, exercise. 13. Estimates of exposure ? significance, methods. 14. Exposition scenarios ? constructions. 15. Assessments and estimates of health risks as a measure for health protection. 16. Assessments and estimates of health risks based on toxicological data. 17. Assessments and estimates of health risks based on epidemiologic data. Setting-up limits ? a measure of health protection of the environment. 18. Protection of constituents of the human environment - water. 19. Protection of constituents of the human environment ? air 20. Protection of constituents of the human environment ? soil 21. Social health risks and protection from their impacts 22. Special characteristics of selected population groups and special characteristics of their environments. Children, elderly people, working people, pregnant women, etc. 23. The EIA and IPPC legislation and its utilisation in the human environment protection. 24. Public health and its legal protection in the world ? the HIA process. 25. Public health protection ? legislation. Contents of practical exercises 1. Measuring chemical substances ? methods used in health risk assessments, measurements. 2. Measuring of physical harms ? methods used in health risk assessment, measurements. 3. Assessment of the health risk based on submitted data ? a case study: air 4. NPK, PEL, the measurement results compared to the limits 5. Assessment of the noise level ? risk, limit level, units of measure 6. Work with laws: information sources, interpretation, judicial acts, orders and decrees

learning outcomes
Students can explain the principle of unity of an organism and its environment They can define the relation between a human organism and its environment. They are aware of health risk and are able to explain these risks. Students know the classification of hygienic service systems. They get an overall picture about the conception and work in subjects pertaining hygiene, their interrelations, and about the necessity of a global approach to the problem issues. Students are able to apply valid laws, together with their technical knowledge of the field, to enforce public health protection. They know well the field of study and are able to utilise the acquired knowledge in real life, covering all levels of the formation and management of environmental protection.
