Course content
1. WW I and the break-up of multinational empires in Europe; 2. Declaration of the right to self-determination, Wilson - Lenin; 3. Centres of ethnic tensions in the interwar Europe; 4. Nazism and fascism, theory and practice; 5. Nationalism and national identities in the communist Eastern Europe; 6. Ethnonationalism in Western Europe since the 1960s; 7. Nationalism and the break-up of Communist Bloc (ethnic conflicts in Yugoslavia and post-Soviet area); 8. Europe at the beginning of the 21st century - post-nationalist period?

Students will be able to define key terms such as nation, secession, irredentism etc. They will be able to apply these terms to practical examples and manifestations of nationalism. They will identify key points in the formation of new nations. They will compare the development of nationalism in different parts of the world and in different periods.
