Course content
System of English phonemes (using the ?IPA? chart), word- and sentence stress, aspects of connected speech (linking, assimilation, elision), intonation. Comparative analysis of Czech and English pronunciation on the segmental and suprasegmental levels.

learning outcomes
The students are able to understand the spoken performance of a native speaker of English or any other English-speaking person; read and analyse a text from the point of view of basic principles of English Phonetics and Phonology; apply the knowledge of terminology to an analysis of written text or spoken performance; use phonetic transcription (the IPA? chart) identify pronunciation differences between 2 basic varieties of English (British, American); compare differences between Czech and English pronunciation both on the level of individual sounds and in connected speech.
