Course content
Basic terminology of the subject, the concept of word from the point of view form and meaning, word as a sign, paradigmatic and syntagmatic semantic relations (synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, hyponyms, meronyms, polysemantic words, phraseologisms, collocations, phrasal verbs). Word-formation (derivation, compounding, conversion, shift of stress, gradation, shortening, back-formation, blending, acronyms, onomatopoeia), work with dictionaries and their typology, interference with Czech in the area of word-meaning (words similar in form, different in meaning), stylistic differentiation of vocabulary.

understand the basic phenomena in phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax
learning outcomes
- explain phenomena and relations within lexical semantics, lexical morphology, phraseology and general lexicology
- describe individual types of lexical units
- describe the components of lexical meaning and the stylistic structure of English vocabulary
. explain the functioning of individual types of semantic relations (euphemisms, international homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, various meanings of polysemantic words)
- describe individual ways of word-formation and introduce relevant examples of words
- describe typology of English dictionaries and their micro- and macro-structure
professional skills
- use linguistic terminology of lexical semantics, lexical morphology, phraseology and general lexicology
- identify individual types of lexical units and analyse their mutual relations in the structure of vocabulary, namely both generally in language and specifically in English
- identify components of lexical meaning and distinguish between stylistically neutral and stylistically marked words
- apply the knowledge of types of relations when identifying and using their more specific forms in practical communication (euphemisms, international homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, various meanings of polysemantic words)
- identify individual ways of word-formation with various types of English words
- apply the knowledge of word-formation in practical use of derivation
- use English vocabulary on a more developed level
- use various types of dictionaries more effectively
