Course content
Working with authentic English texts (mostly contemporary fiction) which are assigned for home translation and subsequently discussed and individual solutions compared from the lexical, grammar and stylistic points of view (sequence of tenses, the use of passive voice, possessive pronouns, nominal phrases, word order, functional sentence perspective etc.) Theoretical basis: connotation, denotation, ?Exact Translation Hypothesis?, semantic and functional equivalence, substitution, compensation, zero semantic correspondence, explanatory note in the text etc.

  • Contact hours - 22 hours per semester

interest in literature, excellent knowledge of Czech, B2 lang level in English
learning outcomes
Students are able to analyze the character of source texts, to define standard translation techniques, and subsequently to use them in practice. They are able to discuss, compare, and justify individual solutions of particular translation problems.
