Course content
Students will further develop language systems and language skills. Students will gradually acquire a basic repertoire of vocabulary items and will practise their use in common everyday situations. Topics: How to; being happy; learn a language in a month; I do not know what to do; If something can go wrong; you must be mine; what would you do?; I have been afraid of it for years; born to sing; the mothers of invention; could do better; Mr Indecisive; bad losers; are you a morning person?; what a coincidence!; strange but true; gossip is good for you. They will also acquire correct use of basic grammatical structures. In grammar they will gain basic syntax and morphology knowledge and practise its application: fixed position of sentence elements within a sentence; identifying complex sentences of lower complexity level; rules, usage and pronunciation of plural nouns, comparative and superlative adjectives, selected verb tenses, definite and indefinite articles. Pronunciation comprehensibility will be further practised. An additional focus is placed on practising orthography and spelling. The participants will, in a simplified mode, take part in interactions (greetings, addressing people and small talks). Listening performance will contain expressions that are concerned with the actual participants, their families, shopping, close environment and employment. They will practise listening comprehension of short, simple messages and statements. The reading texts will also be short and simple, participants will practise scanning and skimming common everyday texts, e.g. advertisements, leaflets, menus, and railway timetables. The participants will practise writing short simple notes and messages about their basic needs. They will concise simple texts (e.g. an email, a biography, an opinion essay). They will consolidate and develop their writing skills.

further develop language systems, extend vocabulary and knowledge of grammatical structures which enable common daily communication within familiar situations and topics; further develop language skills. Grammar: define some verb tense (present, past, future); characterize the fixed position of sentence elements within a sentence; identify complex sentences of lower complexity level; characterize the rules of plural nouns formation and pronunciation of the final consonant; describe how comparative and superlative adjectives are formed; specify use of definite and indefinite articles.

understand conversation on basic topics, such as personal information, family, shopping, etc.; understand simple messages and statements; read with comprehension texts containing predictable information, such as railway timetables, menus, advertisements, simple stories; understand descriptions of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters; communicate and react in simple routine situations, develop the simple conversation; use simple phrases to describe themselves, their family, education and employment and free-time activities; produce simple formal and informal texts. Grammar: form and use some verb tense (present, past, future); identify fixed position of sentence elements within a sentence; identify complex sentences of lower complexity level; form and use complex sentences; form and use plural nouns; form and use comparative and superlative adjectives using rules; use definite and indefinite articles.
