Course content
Students´ oral performance and subsequent correction of potential pronunciation mistakes. Listening to and comprehension of English spoken discourse (texts, songs, films, etc.) followed by a discussion concerning English pronunciation: system of English phonemes, IPA chart, word and sentence stress, aspects of connected speech, intonation. Comparative analysis of Czech and English pronunciation on segmental and suprasegmental levels.

- read an unknown text in English and analyse potential pronunciation problems (of their own as well as of other students in class) both at the segmental level (individual phonemes, word stress) and, predominantly, at the suprasegmental level (sentence stress, aspects of connected speech, rhythm, intonation)
- apply the knowledge of terminology and phonetic/phonemic transcription to an analysis of a text
- analyse spoken performance of a native speaker of English or any other English speaking person from the point of view of basic principles of English phonetics and phonology
- use all the acquired knowledge in the area of English phonetics and phonology with the aim to make their oral performance intelligible as well as to understand spoken performance of English speaking persons
- actively and fluently use the IPA transcription, including the recording of suprasegmentals
