Course content
The course provides an overview of the main periods in the development of American literature in its historical context from the colonial period to the beginning of the 20th century. It covers the poetry and prose of the colonial period, Romanticism (Hawthorne, Melville, Poe), Transcendentalism (Emerson, Thoreau), 19th-century poetry (Dickinson, Whitman), Realism (Twain, James).

Students are capable of - defining the main trends of American literature to the end of the 19th century - discussing the works of individual authors of this period, and identify the main themes and literary forms of a given writer - analysing the relation of individual writers to the period?s general literary trends
