Course content
This course consists of these issues: Basic knowledge of the landscape and the environment. Definition of terms, relations between components of the landscape, geographic and ecosystem approach to the concept of the landscape. Global, regional and local environmental issues. Natural and human-induced changes of the environment. Sources of environmental information and their processing. Instruments of protection of the environment, nature and the landscape. Environmental education as an ethical means of protecting the environment. Objectives, content, conception and status of environmental education in the educational system. Integrating role of geography in environmental education. An overview of environmental education guidelines, methods and means used there. Didactic treatment of selected topics in environmental education. Preparation of a school environmental project. Approaches to assessing the quality of environmental education.

To pass the course students are expected to have basic knowledge of pedagogy and didactics.
learning outcomes
Students are able to: - define fundamental concepts (e.g., ecology, environment, landscape), and describe and differentiate contents of the relevant disciplines (e.g., landscape ecology, environmental sciences, geoecology, environmental education and ecological education); - grasp the basic environmental problems of the world, the Czech Republic and a local region; - interpret the particular themes through appropriate examples; - illustrate basic knowledge of landscape ecology; - use correct technical terminology in this field; - differentiate the ecosystem and complex geoecological concepts of the landscape; - search, organize and process information about the environment and the landscape into a form suitable for didactic use; - illustrate an overview of instruments of protection of the environment, nature and the landscape and explain the status of environmental education in this tool system; - characterize the fundamental curricular documents and clarify their relationship to environmental education; - formulate basic goals of environmental education and distinguish their particular levels and their relationship to the curriculum of geography; - differentiate the particular guidelines of environmental education in terms of their objectives, content focus and methods of education; - characterize the principles and needs of effective coordination of environmental education in primary schools; - grasp an interdisciplinarity of environmental education; - apply relevant knowledge from other subjects in teaching of geography; - prepare a plan for inclusion of a cross-curricular subject of environmental education to the SEP of a concrete school; - assume their own attitude on environmental issues and justify it in discussion through substantive arguments; - moderate a discussion of students about environmental issues, with the proper support of mutual correct communication and tolerance for differing views; - describe possibilities of involvement of extracurricular organizations and institutions into environmental education in schools; - use appropriate means of teaching which comport with a theme, age of pupils and school conditions; - find application for particular themes of cross-curricular subjects of environmental education (according to FEP EE) within the teaching of geography; -prepare a year-long project on the application of environmental education in the SEP, which would be thematically oriented on the integrating role of geography; - devise methods for assessing the quality of environmental education.
