Course content
Week 1 Who we are and what we expect from this course (Group activity). Possibilities for intercultural contacts at the University of West Bohemia Week 2 Intercultural communication: What it is and how it is applied in everyday life. (Discussion) Introduction II: Individual components of the communicative competence (Demonstration & Discussion) Week 3 REMCAP. (Remedial Computer-aided Program for ESP Users) - Individual Work & Reinforcement. Variations and styles by language. Cultural misunderstandings, pronunciation, phraseology. Week 4 Respect different cultures. (Lecture followed by a Discussion). Cross cultural idioms I. Week 5 Low and High Context Cultures (Discussion). Japanese culture I: Film excerpts Shall We Dance, Fear and Trembling & Sleeping Man ( followed by a Discussion). Week 6 Japanese culture II: Japan: Cultural Profile Individual & group work (Sharing info about individual aspects; Situations (Group work). Week 7 Team Presentations. Indian Culture: Conversation based on photo & Listenning Exercise - Travelling to India + Making and responding to Recommendations. Cultural Diversity Instructional DVD Europe at Work/Chapter 4 Food. Week 8 Team Presentations. Chinese culture I: Cultural Diversity Instructional DVD Europe at Work/Chapter 12. Language acquisition + Discusion based on individul knowledge. Week 9 Team Presentations. Chinese culture II. Excerpt from a Taiwanese FilmYi Yi/A One and A Two (followed by a Discussion). Week 10 Team Presentations. Arab culture I.: Cultural Diversity Instructional DVD Europe at Work/Chapter 2. Appearance. Week 11 Team Presentations. Arab culture II.:Cultural Diversity Instructional DVD Europe at Work/Chapters 5. Religion, and 13. Gender. "Culturally Comfortable" English (Discussion) Week 12 Final test based on course work. Week 13 Consolidation and evaluation.
