Course content
1. The terrorist discourse - an introduction 2. Writing the history of terrorism - Tower of Babel's confusion of languages and the expansion of terror's meaning 3. Constructing terror/ism as an object of research - from reification to strategy 4. Collective violence and the question of legitimacy 5. Organizing violence, group and protest 6. Discipline, violence and the state 7. Metaphors of terrorist discourse 8. Public enemy and the state of exception

learning outcomes
Student will be able to provide a definition and explanation of terrorism as a concept, and will be able to identify the basic historical as well as present types and methods of terrorism. They will be able to describe the changes in the practice of terrorism since the 19th century as well as the shifts in motivations and methods. Students will be able to define the basic attributes of contemporary (modern) terrorism, its main goals, reasons and methods. They will be able to analyse the role of terrorism in contemporary security and its impact on the systemic as well as on the intrastate level. They will have detailed knowledge of the most notorious contemporary terrorist groups, their specific goals, organization and practice. Students will be able to define and describe the manner in which activities targeting terrorism are organized and performed at the supranational and intrastate levels.
