Course content
1. Status of parties in party system (relevance, pro-system vs. anti-system) 2. Status of parties in party system (minor and major parties) 3. Political parties and political systems (democracy, authoritarianism, totalitarianism) 4. Political parties and political regimes (parliamentarism, semi-presidentialism, presidentialism) 5. Coalition theory 6. Theory of opposition 7. Party systems and electoral systems 8. Fragmentation and polarization of party systems 9. Political parties and party system in the Czech republic 10. Political parties and party systems in Western European and American consolidated democracies 11. Political parites and party systems in the new Central and Eastern European democracies 12. Political parties and party systems in selected areas outside Europe 13. European supranational parties in the European parliament

learning outcomes
Graduates will have detailed knowledge of political systems and party systems. They will be able to reflect on their status in connection with presidential, semi-presidential of parliamentary systems of government. They will be able to analyse the status of national political parties in the context of the process of europeisation and describe the related changes in party systems.
